Claire:

Wales is only one of the suggested places of St. Patrick (although it was doubtfully Ireland). Here's WikiAnswers suggestion:

He was born somewhere along the west coast of Britain in the little settlement or village of Bannavem of Taburnia (vico banavem taburniae in his Confessio), which has never been identified with certainty. Sites suggested include Dumbarton, Furness and Somerset, or the coastline of Wales or northern France; another possibility put forward for his birthplace is the settlement of Bannaventa in Northamptonshire, for raiders captured him with "many thousands of people" according to Patrick's autobiographical Confessio, and sold them as slaves in Ireland. The tiny Welsh village of Banwen has often been suggested as his birth place. It was clearly occupied in Roman times, sitting on the Neath-Brecon Roman road and next to the two Roman forts in Coelbren.

I have several "tea towels" with Welsh vocabulary on them, including the #5 sentence, which I actually used to be able to pronounce.

My grandmother and I were watching a soap in Welsh (with subtitles) together a couple of years ago and she asked me if I thought I could learn Welsh. I thought I could if I were immersed in it. I still think about getting a Rosetta course. Not that I'd be able to use it here in the States much, but it would be a fun thing to learn!

Rhys, maybe 'shitting bricks' rather than the too-literal 'shitting planks' is a better translation. It's only borderline swearing really, the mild stuff.

Kristoff - even if they speak Welsh, they won't have a clue what you are on about. Cachau isn't a Welsh word, 'Cachu' is, and means Shit. 'Bant' is South West Wales dialect meaning away, standard Welsh for the same meaning is 'i ffwrdd'. In any case it doesn't mean Fuck Off. The list of welsh swearwords where this phrase is given as a valid one is probably from http://www.insultmonger.com/swearing/welsh.htm
which isn't very accurate. There is a much better, completely correct one here: http://www.clwbmalucachu.co.uk/cheat/cheat_swearing.htm
