Could you survive 24 hours without a computer?

shutdownday.jpg

Shutdown Day is a day whereby people shut down their computers for 24 hours, for no other reason “just to see if they can”. I just fancy doing it, it’s a Saturday. 24 hours without a computer.

By the way, the Wii doesn’t count (it’s a games console). But I won’t use the internet channel.

If you have my Wii number, or my phone, check on me at around 8pm, I may be going delirious.

I will be blogging my day on Saturday, but using an old notepad. I should have a night out, and Colwyn Bay vs. Bridlington to keep me occupied.

So, over to you, could you live 24 hours without a computer? Are you taking part? What would you do to take your mind off Internet Withdrawal Syndrome?

Pffffffffff piss easy. I go ever weekend without going near a PC - I have other stuff to do.

I close down on a Friday and don’t check my emails until Monday morning.

Well I’ve been working on my dissertation and essays for three months so have had to be stuck at my laptop more or less continuously for that time. However, when this is all over (at 2pm when I hand this essay in!)I reckon I could go without it.
I always get the urge to check my e mails (only academic ones) though-that’ll be the tough thing. I’ll give it a go.
p.s. does listening to the radio on the laptop count? I’d have to dig out my little stereo otherwise

One day without a computer should be pretty easy I guess. I can do it… I intend to be hungover all day tomorrow anyway… the bright light of a computer screen would be too much for me.

and to answer Sarah yes listening to the radio on there counts.

All right, all right, listen to you! You’re all far more strong willed than me! I’m just waiting for somebody to say “I can’t do it!”

I know who that somebody is too! ;)

Luckily for me (first time I will ever say that) I have a ton of uni work so I can’t shut the computer down..heh..other wise I would..really!
I did try last year if I remember rightly but I don’t remember making it through the whole 24 hours, maybe because I had a shiny new copy of Oblivion to keep me chained to the desk.

A day is nothing, go for a whole weekend or even a week if your up for a real challenge!!

I don’t know how you can be that addicted to it! It’s not healthy surely?!

Guy: I’m not really, it’s more of a comfort blanket. I don’t spend like all day and night on it, just I switch it on, just so I can easy check my emails/download stuff/etc.

I couldn’t do it. The majority of things in my life revolve around the computer. Its my means of contacting everyone (emails, MSN, Facebook), its my morning entertainment over breakfast (reading bbc.co.uk like a newspaper), it’s what I do all my work on (maths programming stuff), its where my entertainment is (for watching DVDs, listening to music, playing games and reading random internet pages). The only way I’d not go insane would be for me to plan out an entire day of stuff to avoid the PC. Let’s see. Wake up, go for a jog. Shower. Go to town to do some shopping including popping to Sainsburys. Come back. Bake some brownies…. so I’ve got to about 11am and I’m struggling. AAAHhh

Erm, I’m not sure I’m geeky enough for this blog anymore. 24 hours without a computer sounds like a blessing.

AND WII SO DOES COUNT AS A COMPUTER!

I reckon tomorrow it will be very easy to go without a PC, infact this whole weekend will be a break after this morning shopping exploits.

Comment by Celeste

It’s not that we are strong willed we umm just have lives outside of a PC/Laptop….

;-P

Comment by Guy

i have to agree with Tilesey on this one… if its no computer then you really should put it as all computer related electronics!

And you can’t just sit infront the tv - that’s cheating!

I probably wouldn’t normally be able to do it, primarily cos I want itunes playing, but I’m at Leeds Doubles bowling tournament all day on Saturday, so no computers for me (except the bowling scoring ones!!) :)

“the Wii doesn’t count (it’s a games console)”

Dude, c’mon! It’s a game console, sure. One with a computer in it! That’s some selective guideline following if ever I did see it. ;)

This would be fun to do, if it wasn’t for the fact that April is around the corner and I’ve got mucho work to do. Maybe I’ll remember next year?

JB: Indeedy. You could’ve waited until I put my auction ads up ;)

Guy, Merrick & Tilesey: Where do you draw the line though? Say if I go out tomorrow night, and my mates say “lets go on the itbox!”, can’t I go on it, because it’s TECHNICALLY a computer?

Dawn: Good luck for that! I remember the Leeds tourney, I got insanely drunk and abusive. Good times!

Sibz: Really? That suprised me. I’ll let you know how I do :)

I could do it - but I won’t. I’ve got to go fix screens at my in-laws’, have lunch with them, go reclaim my camera from the fancy restaurant my husband took me to tonight (birthday on Sunday), take my son to my mother’s and come back here to clean house and start painting the kitchen. I COULD, but I think I might need to see some blogs during the breaks. And I’ve got a meme to do. Yes - excuses, excuses - and I can’t say I didn’t know because I came here and saw it! So call me weak, but I need my daily blog fix - even if I’m busy as hell doing other things.

I failed. Forgot to get mine and Jen’s bowling averages off the website on Friday night, so had to do it in the morning. AND, got home from the tournament early (i.e. 8pm) and needed to verify house hunting plans with Simon.

I am weak!!
