Sunday Speedlinking for 15/07/07

As a little new feature for this blog, I am going to do a “Sunday Speedlinking”. Basically, these blog posts and stories have interested me in the last week, and – whilst they don’t deserve a full entry – they do deserve a little mention. Here we go.

  • First of was a story on the BBC, about Edinburgh Council replacing the SN07 number plate because some people could find it offensive. SN07 spells “Snot”, the least offensive offensive word probably ever. Can you think of any other non offensive swear words that could be banned by the heavy handed DVLA? I suggest looking at this list for the British Car Number Plate Identifiers and watching Monty Python and The Holy Grail for inspiration for non offensive swear words. Especially The French Taunting Bit.
  • On the list of “Pointless Degrees”, a Degree in Northerness, where you can learn about. I’ve already suggested it to Han, who thinks that if she goes north of Watford she’d get raped. Bless.
  • One thing I’m not linking to is a certain blog on my feed reader. Recently, this blogger shut down her comments for the pure and simple reason she wants to control her pages “to make money”. I’ve got nothing against people shutting down comments for legitimate reasons (vengeful ex’s for one – I switched off comments for about 3 days after I split up with the ex), but this is stupid, and selfish, and deserves to fail. I’m doing my own thing to not supporting her, removing her from my blogroll, and unsubscribing from her feed. It just did not sit well with me. If you agree with me, and know who I’m talking about, I urge you to do the same.
  • One new blog I am linking to is one of my favourite comedian’s Dave Gorman. I saw him in Liverpool a few years back and he was hilarious, I’ve read his his books and they are so funny. I work with a Rarebit Nutter (well, ex Rarebit Nutter, he sold his Mini). I suggest you read his blog too, as it’ll brighten your lives.
  • E3 was this weekend, and the exciting things to come from it from a Wii owner’s perspective is Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and the Wii Zapper, which will be compatible with Medal of Honour in a 32 player online mode. I cannot wait.
  • Finally, have a listen to this file. A radio show called Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher a bottler for contemplating quitting playing for England. Jamie rings up the show and questions him about it. To be honest I agree with him. Steve McLaren made a huge mistake not including him in the setup for the future games, and he probably thought he had enough. He has every right to concentrate on Liverpool instead of England, which he always looked out of place compared to the style over substance contingent of Lampard, Terry, Beckham and Cole. Ask any Liverpool fan if they’d rather win the Champions League or England win the World Cup, and I’m sure they’d pick the former. Hell, if it was Colwyn Bay to win the Champions League or Wales to win the World Cup, I’d pick the seagulls every time. Another good article on it is here. What do you think?

Okay, not speed linking per se, but I’ll try and keep it shorter next week, I’m still getting used to Speedlinking, if you spot anything that you think I’ll be interested in and want included (credit will be given), why not email me?

This seems like a cool new feature. Now I have to keep my eyes peeled for anything interesting to send to ya! But with the way people act these days, there’s bound to be something in the next few days.

Haha, snot! Not a pleasant word but I wouldn’t consider it offensive enough to disallow it on license plate. If anything kids will laugh at the license plate, older people will question the reasons for such license plate. Offended though? Never.

I don’t see the point in that degree. You can learn about those subjects at any university teaching art, music and history etc, they just aren’t specific to the northern life.

As tempting as buying more Wii related games is I’m going to have to wait. Wait, until I can actually use money without being broke after.

I think Jamie Carragher is a good defender but for him to “step aside” to give other players is a contradiction to what his original decision was about. I’m not a Liverpool supporter but Carragher is a good enough player to prove that he is worth a regular spot, despite his age. He can’t really say a lot about his overall performance for England because in general the England players haven’t played well, as they do for their club. Of course he’d want to win the European Cup with his country but I’m sure he’d want to have played a major part, and not sitting out matches just to warm up the bench. However, I’ll try not to be biased, Wes Brown is also a good defender. Yes, he has his lapse of concentration but what defender doesn’t? Other than that he plays well and is reliable. If there is a negative it’d be the fact – besides concentration – that he’s prone to injury. Can’t say I can agree with you about Joe Cole, he plays well throughout the tournaments. Yes, he plays with flair but he does have substance too, with his ability to score and assist. In my opinion, without him England lack a certain attacking threat. Even after his injury – during the qualifiers – he played well, more so in the first half than in the second, where his input seemed to fade.

Well written, my friend! Thanks for the read ;)

You know, I have some mixed feelings about that blog you are referring to. The thing that I think we can all learn from it, though, is why are people so emotionally engaged with that blog? They are, myself included. If I could figure out the psychology behind that, it would really be something. I would love for people to have feelings about my blog, as opposed to not really noticing if I shut it down tomorrow, which I suspect may be the case.

No comments? I can’t even get access to ‘that’ blog!
    Mike.

  7. Paddy says:

Well although not really related to the post, this is by far one of the sexiest layouts I’ve seen. Pure and utter brilliance. Hurrah for Rice Wine!

I don’t know. I go away for a week and look what happens. The world has literally come crashing down since I left the UK’s shores. Sure before I left the prime minister changed, terrorists started bombing everywhere again and killing cute bunnies, causing taxes to rise, single handedly cause global warming and anything else the media wants to blame on them, and Lewis Hamilton managed to mess up his pole position at the GP. _BUT_ the big thing that happened whilst I was away. Look at this blog! Its all changed! I like it, I don’t tend to like change, so it’ll take a while for me to be happily comfortable again, but all is good. Except the RSS feed thingy. I don’t want it. Don’t do RSS. Like browsing all my favourite sites many times a day and them not changing and then being happy when one has. No RSS! Booooo! And now you’ve made the bloody button so big it’s harder to ignore *sigh* oh well. Looks like youre week has been ok, I’ve read up on all the missed posts. Good work.
