Three Things That I’ve Yet To Achieve as a Blogger

I’ve been blogging for five years, and, whilst that alone has been successful, and ticked off a lot of my list (been on the radio, dated one of my readers), there are three things I would love to get with this blog. Okay, one of them’s vain, one of them’s unachievable and the other is rather boring, but it’s three things that this blog has yet to achieve for me which I would like.

An Article Published

I’d love one of my posts to be published, or a general journalisticy type to write about it. I know it’s vain, but it seems that every blog gets even a little bit of main stream media coverage, even Han’s. I’d love to have an article, a post or even just my link published in something a little more readership than the excellent Colwyn Bay FC Programme. It just seems more concrete than the internet. The fact I could hold it in my hand (it’s why I love letters, cards and postcards – thanks Han!).

I’d love to be in a book, either write a whole one regarding blogging or just having one of my posts published in one of those “Blogging Digest” books that come out around Christmas. I need to find out who’s actually doing one when they are organising them, rather than 3 months after the submission date.

At least I can say “I’ve never had the opportunity to be in one” rather than “My entries are too rubbish to be in one”.

A Full Time Income

Obviously a dream would be that this blog and the forums associated with it generate enough money (either through adsesne, direct advertising, or something completely different like a book deal) where I don’t have to I probably put in 2-3 hours a day blogging or blog related activities (such as writing comments on other people’s blogs, designing, sending e-mails etc.). This is as well as an enjoyable full time job. I enjoy working on this blog, and probably would do it for free, but I’d love it to become my job, at least for a little while.

That being said, this blog would be a hell of a lot better if I got paid to write it. Why? I’d spend all day down the pub and come up with some fantastic ideas (seriously, I have about 5 posts I can post whenever I can’t be arsed writing of “Thing’s I’ve thought of down the pub).

A Facebook Appreciation Society

Oh come on, Abby Lee has one, Mr Square Head John Chow has one, why can’t I have one? I mean, I’ve been invited to stupider, more pointless groups. Hell, I’ve created stupider, pointless groups. Why not a “Gospel According To Rhys” Appreciation group? I would make one myself, but that’s just a bit too vain, isn’t it?

EDIT: Somebody (Bush) has created a “The Gospel According To Rhys Appreciation Society” on Facebook. You can join it here.

So go on, what would doors would you like opened up with your blogging? Chat shows that’d make Jeremy Kyle look nice? Scandals with strippers? Columns in newspapers where you can debunk all major religions? A nobel prize? Share your thoughts in the comments or in the forum!

Of course the last point was in no way a massive hint for one of your readers who also has a facebook profile to in actual fact set up said group….

  2. Rhys says:

You are right, it wasn’t! I truly only mentioned it in jest.

  3. Celeste says:

    Pffffffffffffffft yeah yeah. ;oD

  4. Rhys says:

It’s true! I admit, I was struggling for a third one to put there. So I went a bit outlandish :)

  5. John Lampard says:

Get an article published: ok. Make a full time income blogging: ok again. But a “Facebook Appreciation Society”? I think I’d prefer to have another article published! ;)

  6. Han says:

wow I’ve beaten you at something with my crappy blog lol! :D I was thinking about all that book publishing molarchy but unless you write consistantly about something then theres never going to be that much to publish, otherwise it becomes a printed diary which is more frustrating cos noone can click the links!

I joined your group! *raving fangirl alert* or not…

  7. Sibz says:

I’m tempted to not join your group out of principal. That was waaaay too big a hint. Only thing to make it worse would have been writing *nudge*nudge*wink*wink* after it!

  8. Jem says:

Hmm, this makes me consider what I’ve achieved as a blogger.. *ponders potential entry*

  9. Worthy goals, though I don’t know what this Facebook is. I’m thinking it’s either a new compact makeup kit or it’s an online cult.

Here are my goals as a blogger.

    1. To someday read and understand an entire Wikipedia entry.

    2. I want a rich supermodel to discover my blog, fall in love with me, and ride me away on her white horse.

    3. I want blogger to ban me so I can be more productive in real life.

  10. Paddy says:

I’m conisdering changing my name to ‘Funny & Interesting Stuff’ too.. Haha it worked on me.. I clicked!

I would love to earn $25 a week from just advertising… That would be fantastic.

I’d also love to earn $250 a week from just advertising… That would be even better.

Article published? What about that thing on that website that was a really popular website.. You know, the one where you were interviewed.

I still think Rhys ‘Wine’. Hahah. I’m going back to bed.

  11. Paddy says:

    Buggar.. I meant rice wine

  12. Sayre says:

Hmmm… I don’t know if this counts, but I went to a small family reunion this past 4th of July (yes, I’m an American) and there was a bit of discussion of blogs, since we have gotten back in touch with each other because of them, and one of the non-family blogs we talked about was yours. So in a very small way, you are famous over here…

  13. Claire says:

I’d like to be able to live off Ad revenue (a la Dooce), it would also be cool if I had my own Wikipedia entry… And a book too, I definitely want one of those.

It seems many bloggers want very similar things…

  14. Genesis says:

Hmmm, interesting. You´ve got me thinking. Up till now, I only wanted to earn money (ok, ok, and a bit of fame) on my blog. But since we are talking outlandish . . . .
    1. Earn a lot of money
    2. Catch the attention of some Hollywood bigshot and get a writing deal for a tv series (preferably Supernatural so I can meet Jensen Ackles)
    3. Get a heap of fun blogger awards.

  15. cooliojones says:

Have you set any goals in regards to what you want, or is this just an optimistic, “In a perfect world” type of thing? Your site looks like it could do well given the right amount of exposure.

  16. Dont worry man , your blog is great , keep trying hard and you will achieve it too .

  17. There’s a newspaper in Boston, that really focuses on getting submissions from bloggers (though it seems they focus on their internal blogging community). I’ve yet to be published in the paper, Boston Now, but would love to get on the train, open up Boston Now and see my name in print. Though it seems a bit vain, it’s also validation that your writing is good enough to use trees to reproduce it.

Plus, that’s definitely something I would toss on my resume **published writer**!

  18. Britney says:

hi nice post, i enjoyed it
