A few seasons ago I was watching Everton at Old Trafford (Man Utd home ground for all none footy fans) at a time when we were near the bottom of the league and in danger of being relegated.

Man Utd were 2-0 up and their fans started singing “Going down, going down, going down” in the direction of the Everton fans – to which we responded with “So are we, so are we, so are we’! Brilliant!

The best chants are the spontaneous ones – the unplanned ones that come about because of something that has happened at the match. There have been various ones at Stoke over the years, but one of the funniest things wasn’t a chant but what they did. It came over the PA system that a man’s wife had gone into labour and that he needed to go and see her. Cue rapturous applause and cheering from the Stoke fans

Villa Fans i have found sing the funniest songs – one of my favourites was watching them away at Wycombe Wanderers in the Carling Cup a few years ago.

Chanting at the Wyombe keeper
“SHIT HAR! The goalies got shit hair, the goalies got shit hair!”

this went on for some time and was hilarious on 2 fronts –
1. the goalies buffon was dire…
2. a bunch of brummies 90% skin heads singing it!
