Right, we’re a few days into the new year already, and no doubt people have scuppered up their new year’s resolutions already.
Which is why I didn’t make any this year.
You see, I read a post from Jem where she talked about her “Goals for 2008″. They sound a lot better because they’re achievable, and not completely out of reach, and sound more positive rather than “don’t do this, don’t do that”. Here are my 3.
1. Learn To Drive
This is the biggie. I’m still at the ripe old age of 23 unable to drive a car. I’ve managed to get hold of a provisional licence this year, but - despite ringing round - I’m yet to get on the road.
I’m beginning to suffer as such, it takes me generally over an hour to get to Llandudno, no more than 15 minutes away by car. Whether I buy a car after learning will be interesting, but I’d like the option there.
2. Beat my brother to North America
I’m stupidly competitive, I find it makes things more fun, so imagine my horror when an e-mail arrived from Morocco from my brother saying “I’ve beaten you to Africa”. I was livid! Either way, since I’ve obtained the travelling bug, and the only continent Rick has yet to be to is North America, I’m going, I’m going to go there before June (when he goes), and I will win.
3. Lose My Holiday Weight
Yes, one toll of the previous holiday (specifically the food in Italy and France, the Beer in Germany and Febo’s in Holland) was that I’m still a fat bastard from the holiday. Sure, I got a lot of exercise ;), but I’m still physically suffering from the trip, a few of my clothes still don’t fit, and Christmas has made my behind even bigger. I’ve started exercising a little bit more through my monday night football group, and I cannot wait to get back to it this monday. I just need to do more though.
What are your goals for 2008?

Like you I also really need to get to North America very soon. Probably around July time once Uni has finished. I’ve been wanting to go since I was very small so I am as excited as hell already. Not to mention the US still sells Mountain Dew which is the best drink ever.
I think my biggest non work related goal has to be either that one or to get up to Scotland for a few days in the summer too.
I have a few aims. I started organising myself toward one of them last night.
Whoo! I inspired someone to ditch the oh-so-predictable resolutions!
You’re not alone with not being able to drive though. I’m 22 this year and I don’t drive either. I don’t really have a need though, and with the ever increasing price of petrol I don’t see myself doing it any time soon.
You’re only 21?!?!? I always thought you were much older (you have an air of maturity about you….in agood way :))
Well, if you need a pplace to stay in North America, let me know. California isn’t too bad a place to visit.
Beat you to North America, and have a free night out on you come November.
I can see this is going to be a good year
I’ll offer up our place in the Washington DC area to you too!
Nice goals… pretty achievable.
Good luck on all of them. Where are you going in North America?California? Washington DC? Canada?
I’m thinking New York for my first visit. May see if I can get a few days in somewhere like Boston too. That general vicinity
Good luck with your goals. I always keep mine secret as sometimes other people can put dampers on what you want to do or achieve - there’s a lot of negativity about.
N. America is fantastic. I think one of my best times ever was driving around the west coast - San Francisco, LA, Yosemite, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monterray and so on. You’ve got to go there!
Mike.
I started driving when I was 12 (joys of living on a farm), and got my license when I was 16, and then my independence. I actually have never really known what it is like to not be able to drive myself around as I please.
