great post Rhys. as a relative newbie to twitter, it was a real eye opener to see the events unfold surrounding MJ's death. from one tiny tweet which drew my attention to it, the web seemed to explode and suddenly there were rumours everywhere. even before the main news got a hold of it (bbc, sky etc).

i mean, ive heard how powerful things like twitter can be (the hudson plane crash) but this was the first time id seen it in action. was a real eye opener. it was massive. and kinda exciting (in a morbid sense) to be part of something so big and so sudden. im oddly proud to say i heard it on twitter first (wat a geek)

i still wanted confirmation from the main news agencies tho before i believed it!

Good post. Raises many questions. I actually did an assignment about the different media and whether the rise of social media and news customisation will create a generation people lacking knowledge of issues outside their own area of interest. Slightly off-topic, but I concluded that it won't, because the major issues always make it through to the small-time social media anyway, in some shape or form, usually social networking media (ie facebook) anyway.

Traditional media needs to, as they are starting to, use the new media to their advantage. Play to it's strengths. Link back to their official websites.

The problem with the new media is, as you said, the integrity is often questionable. And if they get something as huge as MJs death wrong, well it could be the end of the site.
