Just like the cop [the other commenter with a spammy name] im not keen on link exchanges but i have done them once or twice successfully [getting prominent links on huge pr 8 & 9 blogs] using a similar method to your example, but dont just write "big fan of your blog" instead tell them why you like their blog - since alot of bloggers recieve link exchange propositions you need to PROVE your a fan of their blog - its easy to write a post bridging on from one of their posts, you dont need to read more than 1 or 2 posts from that blog before leaving.

i could technical write this comment in a post, expand it a little and link to you, but have i proven that im a big fan of your blog? to be honest, this is the first time in a year-ish ive been here.

I never thought so much about exchanging links may be because I m not much interested. But I do get mails for exchanging links and now I can relate those mail with your article. I agree with all your points and will surely take care of all the points from next time I will get mails to exchange links.

I'm not keen on link exchanges. Aside from the spammy messages you mentioned above, anyone who has more than a few reciprocal links is unlikely to check those links are reciprocated, at least not on a regular basis. A script could be used to monitor all your links and ensure they are reciprocated - however, a script would only be able to check if the link appears in the source code, and not determine if the link appears at a certain position on the page. Nor could it reliably detect if the link was actually visible to users. So, another drawback of link exchanges is the manual effort in checking that people actually reciprocate.
